Friday, January 9, Holly Book Club will once again be entertained by Sharon Hudspeth who will review the book Schultz and Peanuts. This biography of the man behind "Peanuts" was written by David Michaelis and gives insight to the great talent who helped shape the nation's imagination through his cartoons.
The Holly Lake Book Club will kick off the 2009 new year on Friday, January 9. We are once again going to have the privilege of having Ms. Sharon Hudspeth of Tyler with us. A former elementary, high school and adult education teacher, Sharon often used stories in her classrooms. This sparked interest in the subjects she taught and encouraged the enjoyment and the power of reading in her students. Nowadays, she travels with her husband, only spending about half the year in East Texas. She shares folklore, history, personal narratives, as well as warm and funny true stories of her 15+-years of Alaskan adventures.
Sharon will be reviewing the delightful book, Schultz and Peanuts, by David Michaelis, a biography of the brilliant, unseen man behind “ Peanuts.” Schultz daringly chose themes never before attempted in mainstream cartoons-loneliness, isolation, melancholy-but always lightening the darker side with laughter, mingled with the old-fashioned sweetness of childhood. A barber's son, he grew up from modest beginnings and played a central role in shaping the nation's imagination.
This will be an excellent start for our new year and we hope that you will join us at the Chapel on Friday, the 9th, at 10:00. The meeting will be downstairs. As you all know, Book Club member-ship is from January to December, therefore officers will be accepting membership fees of $10.00 in the downstairs lobby.
Following the meeting, we will all be going to the Fore Seasons for lunch. We hope everyone will join us for this entertaining presentation. It just doesn't get any better than Peanuts!!!
See you at the Chapel

On December 12, the one and only Darlene McEnturff of Holly Lake, will be bringing our 2008 Book Club season to a close. The Christmas season will be made all the more pleasant with her reading of the endearing story, “The Christmas Carol Miracle,” written by Luise (not misspelled) Putcamp, Jr., about the fictional West Texas town of Derrick, and the yearly “carol competition” among the town's schools, and how it affects the hearts and lives of the townspeople. This will be an account that brings the meaning of Christmas to the town and ultimately to all who hear this fascinating story, and it will be brought to us in Darlene's own special way. The program will begin at 10:00 am but join us at 9:30 for cookies and punch
This will be a wonderful addition to the Christmas season and will bring an extraordinary year of Book Club to an end. We have been so fortunate this past year to have exceptional programs brought to us by equally exceptional presenters.
The 2009 officers will be installed by outgoing president, Linda Staggs with her own version of the “Night Before Christmas.” We would like to extend congratulations to these new officers and wish them the best of luck for the new year. Linda and the outgoing officers would like to express a special thanks to all who have played a part in the success of Book Club in 2008. It has been a privilege to work with everyone this past year.
We will be meeting upstairs in the friendship hall so make sure to come early for refreshments and Christmas cheer, plus we will have the added pleasure of having Dru Wood s entertain with piano selections. And, in addition to all this fun, we will be awarding door prizes, so you don't want to miss this one.
Following the meeting, we will be going to Ed's for lunch and invite all to join us.
See you at the Chapel

Also, don't forget about GAME DAY coming in February. It's going to be here before you know it and all game players are encouraged to be making plans for a table. Entry forms will be available in early January at the library and in the Holly Herald. You don't want to miss out on the fun!!!
On Friday, November 14, the Holly Lake Book Club will once again have the pleasure of enjoying one of our own very special ladies, Kay Calvert, reviewing the book “Phoebe Louise.” It will be especially interesting because Kay is the author of this charming book.
It is the engaging account of Kay's mother, Phoebe Louise Flemmons Walker, and the anecdotes that Kay will share with us will be all the more special, since they will be told as only a daughter can relate about her mother. Phoebe Louise was the mother of two daughters, and lived a life true to her convictions. She was a role model throughout her life to all who knew her. Kay has captured the depth of her love for her mother and is allowing us to participate in this moving reflection of Phoebe Louise.
This will be a thoroughly delightful program as Kay shares the family secrets, both funny and surprising. Please join us at 10:00 am at the Chapel as Kay brings her mother into our lives and we hear the story of Phoebe Louise.
Linda Staggs, president, will present the names of those nominated for 2009 officers to the membership for vote. The names of these members were made known at the October meeting. Installation will take place at the December meeting.
Following the meeting, please join us for lunch at Urban Eats.
See you at the Chapel!!!
Barbara
